The convocation, a well-recognized tradition in universities around the globe, is a grand festival observed by the academic world where degree candidates are presented by the university faculty and administration to the degree awarding body of the university. The Chancellor of the university who heads this body confers the degrees as recommended.
Degree Awarding Authority
The Chancellor, the Vice Chancellor, the Advisor, Members of the Board of Governors, and the Deans, together with the Heads of Academic Departments, constitute the degree awarding authority of Daffodil International University.
The Academic Procession
The academic procession is a part of convocations all around the world. It is a colorful but solemn event where graduating students, faculty, members of the Academic Council, members of the Board of Governors, and senior administrative staff of the university participate.
The participants in their ceremonial dresses join the convocation procession and enter the convocation hall. The Registrar, who is also the Convocation Marshal, leads the procession into the hall. The degree candidates take their seats in an area of the hall reserved for them.
Faculty members join the procession in ascending order of seniority; they enter the hall and take their seats alongside the degree candidates.
The Chancellor enters last in the company of the Vice Chancellor, the Chairman, the Board of Governors, the Advisor, the Deans, the Convocation Speaker, the Academic Council, and the Finance Committee.
Once the procession has reached the designated area and all are in place, the formal convocation ceremony begins. The Chairman, the Board of Governors, delivers his welcome address. After that, the Vice Chancellor and the Convocation Speaker deliver their addresses. Then the graduating candidates are presented to the Chancellor for the conferment of degrees by the respective Deans of Faculties. The degrees are conferred and gold medals are awarded. A student selected from the graduating class as the valedictorian addresses the gathering. The Chancellor as the Chief Guest delivers his speech. The Convocation Marshal conducts the session.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, the Chancellor, the Vice Chancellor, the Chairman of the Board of Governors, and the Advisor and other dignitaries leave the site of the ceremony in procession, followed by faculty members and the graduating students. The ceremony concludes when the procession departs from the hall.
The academic apparel of Daffodil International University has been specially designed, although it corresponds closely to the academic regalia used in other universities. The gowns worn by participants are generally black, but the designs differ.
The undergraduates and postgraduates will all wear a black gown, but the color of the lapel (border strip) will be different for them. For the undergraduates, the color will mark the identity of the Faculty. The color of the lapel will be blue for the Faculty of Business and Economics, red for the Faculty of Science and Information Technology, and green for the Faculty of Humanities and Social Science. The color of the lapel will be maroon for all postgraduates of the university; there will be no Faculty distinction.
The mortarboard (hat) is one of the most distinctive features of the academic insignia. In DIU, the color of the mortarboard is black for all participants in the convocation, but the color of the hanging tassels is different, matching that of the lapels.
Daffodil International University faculty members wear black gowns. The Members of the Academic Council and the Heads of the Departments will wear black gowns with red lapels. The Members of the Board of Governors will wear black gowns with blue lapels. The Chancellor, the Vice-Chancellor, Convocation Speaker, Chairman, Advisor, Deans, and the Registrar will wear specially designed regalia.
The logo of Daffodil International University reflects the chief objective of the university which is the dissemination of modern and quality education at a reasonable cost. The color of the Daffodil International University logo is blue and green. The logo is divided into two parts. The upper part includes a globe and world map and an open book while the lower part has the image and color of the national flag.
The color of the Daffodil International University flag is white and light blue while the color of the university emblem is blue and green. The emblem is placed in downstairs of the flag.
Academic Achievements and Special Awards
Undergraduate students graduating with a CGPA of 3.90 or above will receive Summa Cum Laude and a CGPA of 3.75 to less than 3.90 will receive Magna Cum Laude.
Each graduate student graduating with a CGPA of 3.97 or above within four years' time will be awarded a Gold Medal.
